How to Install Acoustic Slat Wall Panels

Prepare the wall surface
Make sure the wall is clean, dry and reasonably flat. Remove any loose plaster, wallpaper or debris. For stud walls, locate and mark the stud positions. For uneven walls, consider fixing timber battens to create a flat mounting surface.
Measure and plan your layout
Measure the wall dimensions and calculate how many panels are needed. Each panel covers 1.44 square metres (2400 x 600mm). Plan the layout so that cuts are symmetrical and centred where possible. Mark horizontal and vertical reference lines on the wall using a spirit level.
Cut panels to size where required
Use a fine-tooth saw or mitre saw to cut panels to size. Cut from the back to minimise chipping on the face side. Mark cut lines clearly and allow for any edge margins. Always wear safety glasses and a dust mask when cutting.
Apply adhesive
Apply grab adhesive in a zigzag pattern to the back of each panel. For heavier panels or ceilings, use both adhesive and mechanical fixings. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for setting times and coverage.
Fix panels to the wall
Press the panel firmly into position against the wall. Use spacers if required to maintain consistent gaps between panels. Secure with temporary supports or pins while the adhesive sets. For battened walls, fix through the panel into the battens using colour-matched screws or hidden fixings.
Work around sockets and obstacles
Mark the position of any sockets, switches or other obstacles on the back of the panel before cutting. Cut socket openings using a jigsaw or oscillating multi-tool. Extend socket boxes if needed to sit flush with the new panel surface.
Finish edges and corners
Finish exposed edges neatly using edge trim, colour-matched filler or sanding. For internal corners, panels can be butted together. For external corners, mitre the edges or use a corner trim for a professional result.
Final check
Check all panels are level, securely fixed and properly aligned. Clean the panel surfaces gently with a dry cloth. Allow adhesive to cure fully before applying any load or hanging items on the wall.
Tips for a professional finish
- Always cut panels from the back side to reduce chipping on the visible face.
- Plan your layout so that cut panels are positioned symmetrically, not at one end.
- Allow 2-3mm expansion gap around the edges if fitting wall-to-wall.
- Use colour-matched filler for any minor gaps or imperfections at joints.
- For heavier installations or ceiling applications, combine adhesive with mechanical fixings.
- Let adhesive cure fully before removing any temporary supports.
